Was machen sie heute ? - Nicolas Coster

Nicolas Coster
(March 1996)
Back when Nicolas Coster's passion for boating and
scuba diving was just a hobby, the actor never thought
that he'd be raiding his own personal funds to transform
his prized yacht into a handicap-accessible vessel that
give disabled and wheelchair- bound individuals the
change to take back their mobility.
Of course, the London born, Royal Academy of Dramatic
Arts- educated actor never expected to be working
almost non-stop on american daytime for over 30 years
either. Nor did he expect to be nominated for four
Daytime Emmy Awards.
"I've done more contract leads on the soaps than
anyone alive, and I'm grateful to all the shows I've been
on," says the actor who most recently portrayed
Eduardo on As The World Turns (although back in the
'60s he had portrayed John on the same soap), and
before that Lionel on Santa Barbara, Steve on All My
Children, Anthony on One Life to Live, Robert on Another
World, as well as a host of contract roles on soaps no
longer on the air.
Although his family life has remained far too sedate to
merit a soap storyline (the actor has three kids and has
been happily married to his second wife Beth since
1983), his professional life has taken a
somewhat-we-turn.
Despite being a certified scuba instructor and founding
member of the Cousteau Society, it wasn't until he got
involved with and helped create the Disabled Diver
Program back in 1981, that his live began to take a new
purpose.
"At the time I was scuba instructor, and we first began
to figure out what the course outlines for teaching
disabled divers would be," says the actor who docked his
boat in New York during his stint on OLTL so he could
work with the disabled divers.
Over the years, what began as an altruistic sideline
slowly took over his live. Nowadays, Coster is spending
thousands to make "massive modifications" on his
Oxnard-docked 58-foot yacht-and his funds are going
fast. In order to keep the boat self sustaining, he's
working on getting his captains license so that he can
charter the boat for weddings, funerals, whale watching
or private parties. "I'm doing all this so I can keep the
disabled diver program going," he explains. "It's a
fabulous thing to watch people who can't use their arms
and legs when they go diving-it's unbelievable; they are
weightless in the water and they have a freedom that
they don't have on land."
Coster says that anyone who'd like to help by making a
contribution, may do so by sending a check or money
order to the Disabled Diver Program International, c/o
the Wester Star, P.O. Box 50976, Provo, Utah, 84605.
"There are so many people sitting in wheelchairs all
across the country and they need to get out."
